Tajikistan's mountains have an interesting and varied topography, and the cultures that inhabit the mountain valleys are astonishingly diverse. There is no better way to observe these contrasts than to travel across the country by 4WD jeep.
Road conditions are often poor, especially over steep mountain passes, but our Toyota Landcruiser 4WD vehicles allow you to travel in comfort. For the more budget-conscious, we can arrange a trip in a Russian UAZ Jeep.
The Pamir Mountains are a remote wilderness with a history of romance and adventure. The 19th century Great Game was concluded in the frontier town of Ishkashim on the Tajik side of the Wakhan River.
The central Pamir (Badakhshan) occupies almost half of modern Tajikistan, a total of 63,700 square Km. The Tajiks call this region Bom-i-Dunyo, the "Roof of the World". Merchants and traders have been travelling by road across the Pamir for centuries. Unlike trading routes across steppe, which form a complex web, the mountain tracks followed a fixed route, passing along valley floors. This tour follows the route from Khorog to Murghob, which was once the Wakhan branch of the ancient Silk Road. Apart from trade caravans and military units, missionaries and pilgrims passed along this road giving it the name Road of Ideologies. Archaeological studies reveal the variety of pre-Islamic religions of the people of Badakhshan, who worshipped fire, the sun and the spirits of their ancestors, and practised a Badakhshani version of Buddhism.
Our recommended itinerary starts from Tashkent or Samarkand, and finishes in Osh or Bishkek. For a shorter trip, it is possible to start or finish in Dushanbe. This route can also be travelled in the opposite direction (start from Bishkek or Osh).

Two-and-a-half thousand years ago, Alexander the Great led his armies in an epic conquest of Central Asia. On his way to Samarkand, Alexander's men passed through the Fann Mountains, and the legends and cult of Alexander still cling to this region today.
Our route follows the trail of Alexander's armies, crossing the Fann mountains, stopping at Iskandarkul ("Lake Alexander"), Khujand (founded by Alexander as Alexandria Eschate, "Alexandria the Farthest"), and the ancient Sogdian city of Penjikent. The Sogdian language, which Alexander would have heard as he passed through this region, is still spoken in the mountain communities here.
